Definition:
A blowout is an uncontrolled release of crude oil or natural gas from a well after pressure control systems fail. It usually results from an undetected or poorly managed kick.
Types of Blowouts:
- Surface blowout: Uncontrolled flow at the rig site
- Subsea blowout: Occurs on offshore wells beneath the sea
- Underground blowout: Fluids move between underground formations
Prevention Tool:
Blowout Preventer (BOP) — a high-pressure safety device installed on the wellhead to shut in the well during a kick.
