Perenco has announced a promising new natural gas discovery in the Onyx field, located offshore Trinidad and Tobago, marking a notable development for the region’s energy sector.
The well, drilled in the eastern portion of the Onyx field, encountered significant gas columns in two separate geological compartments, according to Perenco T&T, the operator of the site.
Onyx Field: A Step Forward for the TSP License
The Onyx field lies within the Teak, Samaan, and Poui (TSP) license area, a mature offshore zone situated in 180 feet of water, between the Poui and Teak fields. While the Onyx field had previously been an undeveloped discovery, this new drilling activity and the successful sidetrack well bring fresh momentum to the field’s development potential.
Perenco’s discovery further emphasizes the exploration potential within mature basins, where newer technologies and targeted drilling continue to unlock value.
What This Means for Trinidad and Tobago’s Gas Sector
Trinidad and Tobago has long been a key player in the Caribbean energy market, particularly in natural gas and LNG exports. With gas demand remaining strong globally, especially for LNG buyers, discoveries like this could play a crucial role in supporting the country’s future production capacity and economic stability.
Perenco’s success at Onyx also signals continued interest and investment in Trinidad’s offshore fields, which had seen a decline in activity in recent years.
